Hyperthyroidism is characterized by hypermetabolism and serum levels of free thyroid hormones. The symptoms are many but include tachycardia, fatigue, weight loss and tremors. The diagnosis is clinical and with thyroid function tests. Treatment depends on the cause. (Merck) Main clinical symptoms of hyperthyroidism include weight loss (often along with a voracious appetite), anxiety, heat intolerance, fatigue, hair loss, weakness, hyperactivity, irritability, apathy, depression, polyuria, polydipsia, and sweating. (Wikipedia) Methimazole is used to treat hyperthyroidism, a condition that occurs when the thyroid gland produces too much thyroid hormone. It also is taken before thyroid surgery or radioactive iodine treatment. (MedlinePlus) Methimazole and propylthiouracil are used to treat conditions in which the thyroid gland produces too much thyroid hormone. These drugs work by making it harder for the body to use iodine to thyroid hormones. Do not block the effects of thyroid hormone that was made by the body before its use has begun. (MayoClinic).
